I enjoy scouring the Internet for weird tidbits (not the physical food type), strange events and quirky places to go to. I’m just cool like that. Ahem, yes. Came across some unusual things to celebrate this month and just thought I’d post them.
September 1st: International Bacon Day
Dammit. I missed International Bacon Day.
September 3rd: National Skyscraper Day
This is the one where you are supposed to honour “the labour of the construction workers and engineers who built the world’s modern architectural wonders”. I’m not sure how many skyscrapers there are in in Perth considering that the United States only considers a skyscraper one over 500 feet (I checked, don’t worry. There are FOUR whole skyscrapers that qualify. Phew). If you’re still feeling a little lacking, go stare at a pictures of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai – the tallest building in the world, standing at 2,723 feet.
September 4th: Eat an Extra Dessert Day
As if we all need a ‘day’ to stipulate this. But at least you can all go ahead and indulge yourselves (completely guilt-free) because this holiday gives you the green light. I could do with some Adriano Zumbo – his desserts I mean, the man himself is not particularly attractive.
September 9th: National Grandparents Day
A holiday made to encourage grandchildren to “tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents provide.” Barack Obama made the official proclamation that this day exists last year. Go make a visit to the grandparents or if they’re too far away, smile at some elderly (there are plenty in Mosman Park).
September 10th: TV Dinner Day
The TV Dinner was first introduced to consumers in the United States in the early 1950s – the pre-packaged, frozen meal that you throw in the microwave and can consume while parked in front of a television screen. Of course it was introduced in the United States. Lean Cuisine actually isn’t too bad these days – it used to be my choice of 2am snack after I realised that McDonald’s is not the most healthy of choices. Took me a while.
September 15th: National Felt Hat Day
Whether you decide to throw on a Robin Hood hat, cowboy hat or some sort of fedora, you can use today to wear your felt-hat-of-choice with pride. Perhaps you’d get mocked and ridiculed (okay, no doubt you will get mocked and ridiculed). But we all know who’s the better sport.
September 19th: Talk Like a Pirate Day
Those of you who already talk like a pirate can now breathe a sigh a relief – one day where you actually seem normal. For those who don’t and need a little help, there’s an official site out there providing lingo in English, German, Dutch, and even a little Mandarin. Have fun.
September 21st: World Gratitude Day
Created in 1977 by hippies. But I think it’s somewhat nice to squeeze those brains of ours and find something that we’re grateful for. Ice cream for example. It makes me happy.
September 22nd: Oktoberfest
Drink lots of beer, listen to oompa music and eat salted meats. The holiday started as a royal wedding celebration but is now just another excuse to get drunk and wear funny outfits (surprise, surprise).
September 24th: National Punctuation Day
“A celebration of the lowly comma, correctly used quotation marks, and other proper uses of periods, semicolons, and the ever-mysterious ellipsis.” The day where one can celebrate the lack of punctuation use these days.
September 28th: Hug a Vegetarian Day
Lucky vegetarians. They must feel loved.
September 29th: Museum Day
Go find a museum to visit – some are actually rather interesting! Okay, I shall include art galleries as museums. Are they actually mutually exclusive? Or is an art gallery already categorised as a museum. It IS the ‘Museum of Contemporary Arts’. Hmm, no clue.

Pull out those party hats!! (Or a felt hat. Really does depend on the day in question…)
