Welcome 2013

January 2, 2013 By Shermaine 2 Comments

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL! May it be full of happiness, and I wish that all things wonderful come your way in the year to come. This year was a little different. No crazy celebrations or drunken escapades, no drama and fireworks (both literal and not), no over-expectations of your night, no crowds to fend off wishing you had a stick. Was the first time in 4 years that NYE was spent with the . . .

It’s Here

MERRY MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU! https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=isPm79xTzM4 A Christmas wish from the true ballers... Christmas was a little unconventional. We made our way to work, spotted some skinny santas, and had roast chicken instead of turkey. A wonderful one nonetheless. I hope that you all enjoyed yours too! . . .

Festive Mould

December 23, 2012 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

Mould. We see it on bread, fruit, walls, etc but this is the first that I've ever seen it in a petri dish in the shape of a Christmas tree. A group of scientists from the J.Craig Venture Institute clearly got into the Christmas spirit and combined science and art to create these little mould sculptures. They did this in an attempt to show the underlying beauty that mould possesses, rather . . .

The Life of a Snowflake

December 20, 2012 By Shermaine 1 Comment

It was supposed to snow yesterday. It didn't. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will actually snow in Shanghai over Christmas, have had too many years of sweltering hot ones. My trip to New York was my one chance of a white Christmas and the snow decides to get lost and find its way to us two days post-Christmas. Nice one. Enough of the snow rant. Instead of snuggling up under a blanket in . . .

O Christmas Tree

December 20, 2012 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

I love Christmas, everything about it just screams happy. So I'm going to make the most of it. The next few days will be Christmas-themed, so apologies in advance if you get a minor overload. Even my VLC icon is so excited, he's wearing a Christmas hat. First, a fact about fir trees. It's not a real Christmas without the tree… The genes of that lavishly decorated Douglas fir are old. Very old: . . .

Colour me Pink

December 11, 2012 By Shermaine 1 Comment

"Lake Hillier is a pink-coloured lake on Middle Island in Western Australia." The shallow briny lake is rimmed with white salt and encircled by dark green forests of eucalyptus and paperbark trees. A narrow strip of white dunes and sand separates the lake from the ocean’s deep waters. Since when did this even exist? Perhaps I should have paid more attention in Australian geography classes. I . . .

Overload

December 11, 2012 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

TOTEMS. A photo series by France-based photographer, Alain Dalorme, that captures the massive loads that Chinese porters carry. It's a sight that I see here on a regular basis, and am still amazed by every time I do. Tyres, boxes, plastic tubes, chairs, flowers, whatever you want - they'll just tie it up with some rope and cycle away. I am honestly amazed by their strength and . . .

The End of the World

December 9, 2012 By Shermaine 3 Comments

We've all heard of those people preparing themselves for the end of the world – a whole bunch of them in 2000 and now another bunch emerging now that we're reaching the 21st of December 2012 (in fact, I'm quite sure that one of them lived in a caravan outside my father's office). One Chinese man decides to merge the Mayan prophesy with Noah's Ark, and decides to build his own version of the ark to . . .
