An Absence of Colour

August 15, 2017 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

Who created this wonderfully detailed black & white piece, you ask? It’s Chris Yee – otherwise known as Yee the East. He’s a Sydney-based artist & illustrator who has a background in graphics design, but what he’s really known for are his traditional “pen and paper” methodologies. Some fun facts about him: He’s a twin. His childhood consisted of a whole lot of Dragonball and . . .

Miniature Worlds

May 14, 2017 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

Australia's often forgotten, being so far away from everything else. However, I've seen a pretty decent portion of art, culture and design news flowing out from our borders over the past few years. Just came across this 15-year-old girl who did an amazing rendition of David Bowie's song 'Space Oddity' on The Voice. In other news – check out this incredible Australian artist Joshua Smith, . . .

Trading Tattoos

March 13, 2017 By Shermaine 2 Comments

I first came across Miso during my visit to the Philip Shaw winery in Australia, and immediately fell in love with her style of illustration. Ukrainian artist Miso (also known as Stanislava Pinchuk) is based in Melbourne, Australia. She started her career as a street artist but later moved her attention to mediums such as paper and installations. Although her ideas bubble up wherever she . . .

Dreamy Mix of Watercolour & Pencil

March 6, 2017 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

Here's one about a fellow Aussie - Elisa Mazzone is a talented art director, illustrator and an avid fan of all things beautiful. Now based in London, she creates gorgeous visual landscapes and keepsakes, weaving mediums together with allegorical needle and thread. She explores the female form through her choice of colours, shapes and flowing lines. Purposely unfinished, the illustrations have an . . .

Florals & Fashion

January 18, 2015 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

There have been great things coming out of Australia these days - admittedly, I get a little flutter of excitement whenever I see that something's from Australia. Call it pride or perhaps surprise, I'm not sure which. Being so far away from the rest of the world with a relatively small population (Shanghai has the same population as the whole of Australia), we don't normally have much news coming . . .

Dream Barn House

June 9, 2014 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

When one says barn house, my mind automatically goes to farm animals and red painted wood. When I saw this house in Melbourne by Whiting Architects, it was clear that this is no longer the case these days. A perfect juxtaposition between the modern & contemporary look that seems to be all the rage these days, and the rustic wooden touches that add a whole bunch of personality to the design of . . .

Random Word Doodles

May 6, 2014 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

Sydney-based concept artist and illustrator Charles Santoso decided to start a project called Random Word Doodles to strengthen his brain muscles. What you can do is to give him a word via his Twitter feed, he picks one and does one of his adorable illustrations. Each one takes around 30 minutes to an hour and a half, done digitally via Photoshop. Which is your favourite? I'm voting for . . .

Colour me Pink

December 11, 2012 By Shermaine 1 Comment

"Lake Hillier is a pink-coloured lake on Middle Island in Western Australia." The shallow briny lake is rimmed with white salt and encircled by dark green forests of eucalyptus and paperbark trees. A narrow strip of white dunes and sand separates the lake from the ocean’s deep waters. Since when did this even exist? Perhaps I should have paid more attention in Australian geography classes. I . . .
