Ceramic Hounds

February 25, 2017 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

If you're looking for a new pot for your plant, look no further than these adorable handmade ceramic dogs. They also double as pin cushions, cups, salt and pepper shakers, and toothpick holders. They're created by Eleonor Bostrom, a Swedish ceramic artist who splits her time between Stockholm and San Francisco. Her speciality is creating sculptures with function, just like these dogs that add a . . .

The Most Beautiful Game

November 12, 2016 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

I just stumbled across Samorost 3 and it's hands-down the most beautiful game I've ever come across. Okay, I don't exactly play many games at all - but every new scene and world provide you with some serious visual eyecandy. Samarost 3 is a puzzle point-and-click adventure game developed by Amanita Design, starring a small, white-clad humanoid with a little cap and brown boots. Each character . . .

My Creative Manifesto

September 15, 2016 By Shermaine 1 Comment

I recently joined the Creative Play Challenge by Jennie from Little Girl Designs, which provides you with a new prompt each week for a year. Sounds good? Join me! Here's the post about it. It's such a great find as I've been looking for a creative community to be a part of for a while now and I'm glad that I stumbled across this one. Do let me know if you come across any others that I can check . . .

Watercoloured Words

September 14, 2016 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

I came across June Digan during my Instagram stalking a couple of months back and so it was a nice surprise to spot her work on Design You Trust. She's a Manila-based graphic designer and artist who picked up watercolour painting as a “daily therapeutic activity after work” - we all need some of that every now and then. How else would adult colouring books become so extremely popular? The . . .

A Flower For You?

September 10, 2016 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

I went to the Tim Burton exhibition in Shanghai and for those of you who are based in this city, please go and visit it. It's one of my top three all-time favourite exhibitions together with Yayoi Kusama and Cai Guo Qiang. The amount of work that he's created throughout his years is incredible and so inspirational. A smorgasbord of whimsy, creepy and magnificent - all in one place. One of . . .

Patterned Pages

September 7, 2016 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

When things get busy, it's hard to find the time to sit down and start drawing. Once in a while, you need a little inspiration and when I see things like this...it certainly works magic on my motivation. Throughout Angela Chan's notebook are beautifully detailed hand-drawn patterns. There's something about patterns that is so therapeutic...and suddenly the world seems bright and shiny . . .

A Colourful World

July 25, 2016 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

I love everything about these maps by Brooklyn based illustrator Libby VanderPloeg. Colour, illustration and hand lettering with a touch of whimsy! Her work comes out of her deep affinity for storytelling, music, letterforms, printed ephemera, and wildlife. The illustrations she has created have been featured in Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Time Out, Condé Nast Traveler & Harper . . .

A New Discovery – HITRECORD

April 3, 2016 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

I've discovered a new obsession: HITRECORD. Basically, it's an open-collaborative production company established by Joseph Gordon-Levitt - this innovative community includes over 100,000 artists of all disciplines (writers, filmmakers, musicians, etc.) adding 250 new members and 2,500+ new pieces of art every day. I have yet to explore it more but my two favourite parts about HITRECORD is . . .

Before & After

March 27, 2016 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

It's easy to see amazing work done by others and brush it off saying that they've always been talented in some way or another. That it's not possible to be as good as they are. Drawing and illustration take a whole lot of hard work. I'm learning that now. After seeing the before and afters of these illustrations really shows you the importance of practice.    Pick up your pen and start . . .

Paper Rides

January 5, 2016 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

"Drawing with a knife" - that's what Hong Kong artist Bovee Lee does with much skill and patience. Instead of channeling her feelings about moving cross-country into nervousness or frustration, she created these intricate hand-cut paper rollercoasters. Talk about a good method of diversion... "In these works, I also draw parallels between one’s romantic relationship and our relationship . . .
