Paper on Paper Doodles

February 22, 2018 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

It's always a wonderful thing to see people use old mediums in new ways. Jules Tardy doesn't just draw on paper to create illustrations - he uses the paper itself to create doodles of people and animals. In a project titled 'Papiers Dechirés' created in 2017, the ripped coloured pieces of paper create shadows, highlights, contrasts, and depth. Originally from Paris, Jules Tardy . . .

A Colourful Paper Universe

May 28, 2017 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

French creative duo Zim & Zou never cease to amaze me. Their latest colourful paper universe was for the window display of the new Hermès store in Dubai at the Mall of the Emirates. Titled ‘Forest Folks’, the duo adds a little magic into the retail world by creating two different scenes referencing a fairytale world including oversized mushrooms, florals, and whimsical creatures. . . .

Miniature Worlds

May 14, 2017 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

Australia's often forgotten, being so far away from everything else. However, I've seen a pretty decent portion of art, culture and design news flowing out from our borders over the past few years. Just came across this 15-year-old girl who did an amazing rendition of David Bowie's song 'Space Oddity' on The Voice. In other news – check out this incredible Australian artist Joshua Smith, . . .

Drawing With Paper

May 10, 2017 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

Why draw on paper when you can do the complete opposite – draw with paper. The art of paper quilling has been around for centuries, using small strips of coloured paper to create different shapes and turning them images, decorative pieces or even jewellery. I remember getting paper quilling packs as a child and twirling and twisting the paper to create birds, flowers, and a whole range of . . .

Ceramic Hounds

February 25, 2017 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

If you're looking for a new pot for your plant, look no further than these adorable handmade ceramic dogs. They also double as pin cushions, cups, salt and pepper shakers, and toothpick holders. They're created by Eleonor Bostrom, a Swedish ceramic artist who splits her time between Stockholm and San Francisco. Her speciality is creating sculptures with function, just like these dogs that add a . . .

Denim as Art

February 9, 2017 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

Ian Berry is a Contemporary British Artist who uses an interesting medium to create his art - denim. It all started in 2006 when Ian was inspired by some old jeans he found while cleaning his room. Since then, he's been endlessly creating art using denim in their original form. Without any use of bleach or paint, Ian sifts through the thousands of jeans he has to find the perfect tones and . . .

Watercoloured Words

September 14, 2016 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

I came across June Digan during my Instagram stalking a couple of months back and so it was a nice surprise to spot her work on Design You Trust. She's a Manila-based graphic designer and artist who picked up watercolour painting as a “daily therapeutic activity after work” - we all need some of that every now and then. How else would adult colouring books become so extremely popular? The . . .

A Flower For You?

September 10, 2016 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

I went to the Tim Burton exhibition in Shanghai and for those of you who are based in this city, please go and visit it. It's one of my top three all-time favourite exhibitions together with Yayoi Kusama and Cai Guo Qiang. The amount of work that he's created throughout his years is incredible and so inspirational. A smorgasbord of whimsy, creepy and magnificent - all in one place. One of . . .

A Colourful World

July 25, 2016 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

I love everything about these maps by Brooklyn based illustrator Libby VanderPloeg. Colour, illustration and hand lettering with a touch of whimsy! Her work comes out of her deep affinity for storytelling, music, letterforms, printed ephemera, and wildlife. The illustrations she has created have been featured in Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Time Out, Condé Nast Traveler & Harper . . .

Shanghai Welcomes

May 5, 2016 By Shermaine Leave a Comment

What do you do when you have an hour to burn before some of your favourite people touchdown in Shanghai? #myhandsneedmorespeed #drawingliketheflash I always heard that according to psychologists, if your friendship lasts past 7 years, it will last forever. I just tried to find scientific proof of this online and in all honesty, the most credible source for this was either Pinterest or . . .
